<h2 data-kind="letter-context;" style="text-align: right; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal">Plantation House, December, 4th 1818</h2>
Sir,
Having mentioned to the governor, the subject of your conversation with me, in respect to the books which were supposed to have arrived on this island for Mr. O'Meara, he has desired me to acquaint you, that amongst some books and new publications, which have recently arrived here, are the French ones mentioned in the enclosed list.
As they are evidently of a description which Mr. O'Meara must have been commissioned to procure, the governor has directed that they should be placed at your disposition for General Bonaparte's use, and he only requests that the circumstance of there having been directed to be delivered to Mr. O'Meara under a false name. The motive for which on other grounds a false address appears to have been assumed, and the clandestine manner so gratuitously and unnecessarily devoted to for introducing them into the island, should have occasioned any delay in their transmission to Longwood, or rendered any application necessary on your part, for obtaining them.
Under the peculiar circumstances however, in which these books have come, the governor will be obliged by your acknowledging the receipt of them.
With reference to what you mentioned to me generally, about the description of books which might be acceptable at Longwood, he has desired me to put up a few from his own collection, of which a list also accompanies; and he will be happy to attend in other respects to the further suggestions you offered to me on the same matter.
I have the honor to be Sir Your most obedient humble servant,
G.Gorrequer
