<p style="text-indent: 1.25cm; margin-top: 0cm">Sir, since I had the honour of replying to the application which you adressed to the Prince Regent for permission to send a Roman Catholic priest to general Bonaparte, I have received a dispatch from St Helena intimating the wish of general Bonaparte to be provided with a French surgeon of reputation, and with an experienced cook in whom he may be able to place confidence. Anxious of all occasions to contribute to the comforts of general Bonaparte in any manner not interfering with the security of his detention at St Helena, His Majesty’s government see no objection to a compliance with his wish, and being aware that they can in any manner better satisfy general Bonaparte with respect to the qualifications of these two persons, than by entrusting the selection of them to your Eminence, I have to request that you will take the necessary measures for engaging a surgeon and a cook to accompany the priest, whom you have proposed to provide. I deem it further necessary to acquaint you, that these persons will be, in common with the priest, required to conform to the regulations and restrictions to which the other individuals attached to general Bonaparte person are subjected at St Helena, and will at their arrival in this country be duly provided with passages to the island, after producing satisfactory proof of their having been engaged by your Eminence. [^1]: Traduction : « Éminence, depuis que j’ai eu l’honneur de répondre à la demande que vous avez adressée au prince Régent pour obtenir la permission d’envoyer un prêtre catholique auprès du général Bonaparte, j’ai reçu une dépêche de Sainte-Hélène m’informant du désir exprimé par le général Bonaparte de se voir pourvu d’un chirurgien français de réputation, ainsi que d’un cuisinier expérimenté en qui il puisse avoir confiance. Désireux, en toutes occasions, de contribuer au confort du général Bonaparte dans toute mesure qui ne compromet pas la sécurité de sa détention à Sainte-Hélène, le gouvernement de Sa Majesté ne voit aucun inconvénient à accéder à ce souhait et, étant convaincu qu’il n’est pas de meilleure façon de satisfaire le général Bonaparte, quant aux qualifications de ces deux personnes qu’en confiant leur choix à Votre Éminence, j’ai l’honneur de vous prier de prendre les dispositions nécessaires pour engager un chirurgien et un cuisinier afin d’accompagner le prêtre que vous vous êtes proposé de fournir. Je crois nécessaire de vous informer en outre, que ces personnes seront, à l’instar du prêtre, tenues de se conformer aux règlements et restrictions auxquels sont soumis les autres individus attachés à la personne du général Bonaparte à Sainte-Hélène, et qu’à leur arrivée dans ce pays, elles recevront dûment leurs autorisations de passage pour l’île après avoir fourni la preuve satisfaisante de leur engagement par Votre Éminence.
