[^1]: Las Cases précise : « L’Empereur n’avait pas dormi de la nuit : dans son insomnie, il s’était amusé à m’écrire une nouvelle lettre en anglais ; il me l’a envoyée cachetée ; j’en ai corrigé les fautes et lui ai répondu, en anglais aussi, par le retour du courrier. Il m’a fort bien compris, ce qui l’a convaincu de ses progrès, et lui a prouvé qu’il pourrait désormais, à toute rigueur, correspondre dans sa nouvelle langue ». Cette nouvelle lettre montre cependant que l’optimisme de Las Cases est quelque peu exagéré !
