hostilités ne pourront recommencer que le 16 août. Je suppose
donc que dès le 1<sup>er</sup> août toutes vos portes seront
organisées, vos remparts garnis d’artillerie et la place en
parfait état de défense. Je suppose que le gouverneur, les
commandants d’artillerie et du génie, le commandant en second de
la place<sup>[^1]</sup>,
le contre-amiral, les chaloupes canonnières, que tout le monde enfin
sera à son poste, et qu’on aura désarmé les habitants, établi
une sévère police, organisé le service des pompes, et que je serai
sans inquiétude sur le sort de cette place importante.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">La 50<sup>e</sup>
division sera au 10 août forte de 12 000 hommes ;
vous pourrez donc la diviser en deux, laisser 4 à 5 000 hommes
pour la garde de Hambourg, et vous faire du reste une bonne division
de 6 à 7 000 hommes, ce qui, joint aux hommes du
dépôt de cavalerie et de l’artillerie, aux matelots, à la
gendarmerie, aux douanes, assurera toujours une garnison de
8 000 Français à Hambourg. Vous sentez qu’il serait
ridicule de tenir toute la 50<sup>e</sup> division à ne rien
faire dans Hambourg, tant que la position que vous prendrez couvrira
cette place.</p><dl>

</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">Vos quatre divisions
auront leur artillerie, quatre compagnies d’équipages militaires,
leurs ambulances, etc., ce qui fera une armée de plus de
40 000 hommes. Je désire qu’au 5 août ces
40 000 hommes soient campés en avant de Hambourg, dans une
belle position, ayant des postes d’infanterie et de cavalerie sur
le cordon ; que, par cette position offensive, vous puissiez
contenir l’armée suédoise et tout ce que l’ennemi a dans le
Mecklembourg, et l’empêcher de se porter sur Berlin à la
rencontre d’une armée de 60 000 hommes que j’y
enverrai ; qu’enfin vous soyez prêt à suivre le mouvement de
l’ennemi, ou à l’attaquer s’il était en force inférieure.
Vous pouvez avoir quelques détachements d’infanterie et de
cavalerie le long de l’Elbe, mais de manière que vous puissiez les
reployer promptement au moment de la reprise des hostilités, afin
que vos troupes soient toutes réunies et que vous n’ayez à avoir
aucune crainte ni aucune échauffourée.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm">Le ministre de la
Guerre doit vous avoir annoncé les différents détachements de la
50<sup>e </sup>division qui arrivent ; ainsi vous devez
bien savoir à quoi vous en tenir. Pressez l’arrivée de tous vos
détachements et de toutes vos remontes de cavalerie. Faites-moi
connaître la position où vous voulez camper vos quatre divisions.
Je suppose que vous aurez assuré vos vivres en farine et biscuit
pour un mois. Je suppose aussi que vous aurez pris connaissance du
corps danois. N’attendez pas au dernier moment pour concentrer
toutes les troupes françaises ; ce qui ne vous empêchera pas
d’occuper Lubeck par un commandant français, par de la gendarmerie
et quelques postes de cavalerie légère et de voltigeurs français.
Faites-moi connaître positivement ce que vous croyez que vous
pourrez avoir d’hommes de cavalerie au 15 août, soit à pied,
soit à cheval. Vous savez toutes les dispositions qui ont été
